Target Audience Research - UK Tribes

Channel 4 did a study into UK Tribes and the groups younger people fall into as they do not fall into regular demographics magazines use to discover what appeals to their readers, these personality types are referred to as psychographics. From this study I found out that the two main groups my rap magazine would appeal to would be Urban and Mainstream, some sub-groups of other tribes like urban artists. Groups included in the Urban category include: Get Paid Crew, Trackies, Stylers and Wastemen - These groups tend to be linked to inner city living and are always searching for new sounds, it would make sense that they are fans of rap as this genre tends to be the type of music that dominates the inner cities. People in the Urban Tribes are very proud and enthusiastic about their roots, and seeing as lots of English rappers come from London it would mean those who fall into the Urban category would be a fan of rap music.

The second category that my magazine is aimed at, as is mentioned above, is the mainstream tribe. These types of people just tend to follow the crowd and enjoy listening to what is popular, in recent times the music genre that is becoming more and more popular has been rap. Due to things like social media creating method to share music interest, the style of rap is loved by almost everyone from those in the early-mid teens to people in their mid 20s. Rap has become less 'hardcore' since artists like the N.W.A and the Wu-Tang clan, not that these artists are labelled as 'hardcore'; rappers like Drake have a more approachable sound with less profanity which could lead someone into becoming an avid fan of the genre if that person's friends also enjoy it.

In recent times, groups like Hypebeasts which fall into the Aspirant category have been discovering Japanese rap artists like Keith Ape; artists like this have been discovered through social media and a large percentage of people who enjoy rap spend a lot of their time on the internet, where they could come across a new artist from a different country.
